Girl Group From the 90s I Got This Funny Feeling

1 Funky Divas 1. En Vogue

The quintessential R&B girl group, En Vogue did more than any other act to inspire the entire genre represented here - without them none of the bands on this list (with one possible exception) would sound the same, and without their success many would probably never have gotten record deals. With the departure of founder-member Dawn Robinson during the making of their third album EV3, line-up changes and instability have probably cost En Vogue the depth of back-catalogue they deserve, but their legacy and influence is unarguable.

Releasing their first album at the turn of the decade in April 1990, it was their sophomore set Funky Divas that is their masterpiece. Not only one of the greatest girl group albums ever made, it is among the best R&B albums of the decade. Comprising a perhaps surprisingly genre-bending array of material, from the lush Aretha cover Giving Him Something He Can Feel to the R(ock)&B fizz of Free Your Mind, while also containing probably their best single My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It), full of sass, strength, attitude and beauty. They went on to release two further studio albums without Robinson (the second of which was also recorded after the departure of fellow original member Maxine Jones), one of which - Masterpiece Theatre - is a slightly odd sort-of concept album which is really rather good.

2 CrazySexyCool 2. TLC

The best-selling female R&B group of all time, TLC are second-only to En Vogue in legacy and influence. After their 1992 debut, which positioned them as a harder-edged counter-point to the other group, with an emphasis on youth, attitude and image, TLC exploded with CrazySexyCool, a phenomenal album, which managed to combine huge commercial success with a level of critical credibility the genre often lacked. Comprising of three very different voices, TLC eschewed the close vocal harmonies of En Vogue for a greater emphasis on hip hop elements. Astoundingly, they followed this with an album of pretty much equal merit, Fanmail. Despite their huge record sales, TLC filed for bankruptcy in 1995, and were not immune to infighting and personal tensions. Worse was to come in Spring 2002 when Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes was killed in a car crash in Honduras while filming a documentary. TLC had already begun work on what was to become their final album, 3D, which was released later that year and contained the last few tracks Lopes had recorded with the group, as well as several songs paying tribute to her. The two surviving members signalled the retirement of TLC after the promotion of that record.

3 It's About Time 3. SWV

It's probably fair to say that the gigantic success of SWV is in retrospect less well remembered than the genre-defining achievements of TLC or En Vogue. But the Teddy Riley-helmed multi-platinum debut from the Sisters with Voices It's About Time shifted more than three and a half million copies in the US alone, and spawned several massive singles, most notably the Michael Jackson-sampling Right Here (Human Nature remix), It's About Time ranked by VH1 as the #18 Greatest R&B song of the '90s, and the blockbuster ballad Weak. Cheryl 'Coko' Gamble's distinctive vocal tone and some of the tightest harmonies of the genre (indicative perhaps of the more obvious gospel lineage of the group) make SWV's songs instantly recognisable. While the hits continued through the decade (the second single from their sophomore set Use Your Heart was a very early Neptunes production, Pharrell Williams having earlier contributed a small rap solo to a remix of Right Here) diminishing commercial returns set in, and the group disbanded in 1998. However, theirs is one of the more successful reunions of the genre, spawning two albums in the 2010s - including 2016's Still - that more than honour their legacy.

8 Don't Walk Away 8. Jade

Hailing from Chicago, Jade's origin is a curious one. Producer Vassal Benford had secured a place for the song I Wanna Love You / Don't Walk Away on the soundtrack to the movie Class Act before the members of the group - then known as JAD - had been recorded on it. When he was unable to do so in time, Benford lobbied the record label to remove two members of the group (one of whom, Debra Mitchell, went on to join Vybe) and replace them with the vocalists who had recorded the temp track. With the line up finalised, and a quick name-change later, Jade had a US platinum-selling debut LP, Jade to the Max, and a 1.5 million-selling single in the form of Don't Walk Away. While their second album provided a further Top 20 single, they disbanded soon after.
